What to Expect During CO₂ Laser Recovery: A Day-by-Day Guide

Considering CO₂ laser but worried about recovery? Here's exactly what to expect — day by day — from your Solaria treatment at Hello Gorgeous.

Published March 16, 2026 by Hello Gorgeous Med Spa

The Solaria CO₂ fractional laser is the most powerful skin resurfacing treatment available. It produces dramatic results — but it does require real downtime. Knowing exactly what to expect eliminates the anxiety and helps you plan.

Here's your day-by-day recovery guide based on what our patients experience at Hello Gorgeous Med Spa.

Day 0: Treatment Day

During treatment:

  • Numbing cream applied for 30–45 minutes
  • Treatment takes 30–60 minutes depending on area
  • You'll feel warmth and some stinging (manageable with numbing)

Immediately after:

  • Skin is bright red and feels very warm
  • Mild swelling begins
  • Ointment (Aquaphor) is applied immediately
  • You may feel like you have a severe sunburn

What to do: Have someone drive you home. Apply ointment. Start your antiviral medication if prescribed. Sleep elevated on 2 pillows.

Day 1: The Hardest Day

  • Significant redness, swelling, and heat
  • Skin may ooze clear/yellowish fluid — this is NORMAL
  • Face may feel tight and swollen (especially around eyes)
  • Some discomfort — take prescribed pain medication as directed

What to do: Soak skin with cool water or prescribed solution every 2–4 hours. Reapply Aquaphor constantly. Keep skin MOIST — do NOT let it dry out. No makeup. No touching with dirty hands.

Day 2: Still Intense

  • Swelling peaks (this is the worst it will look)
  • Oozing continues
  • Skin feels very tight
  • You won't want to be seen in public — this is expected

What to do: Continue the soak-and-ointment routine. Cool compresses for comfort. Stay hydrated. This is the day to binge your favorite show.

Day 3: The Turn

  • Swelling starts to decrease
  • Oozing slows down
  • Skin begins to darken/bronze — this is the formation of a protective layer
  • You may feel itchy — DO NOT scratch or pick

What to do: Continue gentle cleansing and ointment. You may switch from Aquaphor to a lighter moisturizer if your provider approves. Still no makeup.

Day 4–5: Peeling Begins

  • Dead skin starts to flake and peel
  • Underneath is new, pink, sensitive skin
  • Peeling may be dramatic — sheets of skin coming off
  • Resist every urge to pull or pick (this causes scarring)

What to do: Let dead skin shed naturally. Gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and SPF if you must go outside. The new pink skin is extremely sun-sensitive.

Day 6–7: Emerging

  • Most peeling is complete
  • New pink skin is visible everywhere
  • Skin feels smoother but very sensitive
  • You may be able to wear mineral makeup (ask your provider)

What to do: Continue gentle skincare only. SPF 30+ is CRITICAL from this point forward. No retinol, acids, or active ingredients.

Week 2: The Pink Phase

  • Skin is uniformly pink/red
  • Texture is visibly smoother than before
  • Sensitivity is decreasing
  • You can resume most normal activities

What to do: SPF every day. Gentle moisturizer. Mineral makeup is fine. Avoid direct sun exposure. No active skincare products yet.

Week 3–4: Fading

  • Pink color gradually fades
  • Skin tone begins normalizing
  • You start seeing the real results — smoother, tighter, more even
  • Most people say this is when they fall in love with their skin

What to do: Your provider may clear you to resume retinol and vitamin C. Continue SPF religiously.

Month 1–3: The Collagen Phase

This is where the magic really happens. Even though your skin looks healed on the surface, underneath your body is producing brand new collagen. You'll notice:

  • Progressive tightening
  • Continued texture improvement
  • Pores appearing smaller
  • Fine lines continuing to soften

Month 3–6: Peak Results

Maximum collagen production. This is when before/after photos show the most dramatic difference. The investment of 5–7 days of downtime has paid off with results that last years.

Tips for the Best Recovery

  • 1. Keep skin moist — the #1 rule of CO₂ recovery
  • 2. Don't pick — let everything shed naturally
  • 3. SPF is non-negotiable — your new skin burns in minutes
  • 4. Take your antivirals — cold sore outbreaks on healing skin are serious
  • 5. Stay hydrated — drink more water than usual
  • 6. Be patient — peak results take months, not days
